One of the most common hip conditions that is amenable to treatment with arthroscopic surgery. Patients typically will complain of pain in the groin that is made worse with certain activities. Occasionally, labral tears will occur as a result of trauma. More frequently there is some underlying condition that predisposes patients to a labral tear.
Plain X-rays are often normal, and more advanced testing with an MRI scan is necessary to aid in the diagnosis of a labral tear. Often dye is injected in the hip joint prior to the MRI scan to better visualize the labrum and other structures within the hip joint. Even the sophisticated MRI scan may occasionally miss a labral tear.
Treatment for labral tears depends on the nature of the symptoms and any underlying pathology that may be present. Isolated labral tears respond very well to arthroscopic management; however, if any articular cartilage damage is present, the results are not as encouraging.
It is important that you and your physician understand the underlying disease process and your goals to develop a treatment plan that is individualized and appropriate to you.
